Sun xVM and Common Agent Container

Nice new site y'all - hat's off!!

So, did anyone else notice Sun's recent xVM open source virtualization and systems management announcement in November? You can get up to speed here: https://openxvm.dev.java.net/

I think this looks very cool, personally, and further I think this really emphasizes the degree to which Sun has embraced open source. As I wrote on my blog when I saw the announcement, if you go down the list of major technologies, everything in Sun's portfolio is Open Source, which is one of the best track records in the industry.

  • OS - Open Source

  • Middleware - Open Source

  • Systems Management - Open Source

  • Virtualization - Open Source

  • File System - Open Source

Getting back to xVM, the first peice they made available under GPLv3 is their Common Agent Container, which they describe as: an open source community project

around a Java(TM) / JMX Management Services Container enabling the easy deployment and administration of Java management modules.

I'm looking into what would be required to move from NetDirector's current Python-based Agent to CAC. And there had been discussion around the virtual halls of OMC regarding the theoretical beauty of standardizing on a common agent in order to simplify systems management deployment and use. And CAC, on its surface, looks to be a way to achieve it. What do others think?

Re: Sun xVM and Common Agent Container

Thanks for the plug Greg.

We're working on releasing the entire xVM Ops Center product - agent, proxy, satellite server, all of it, to open source. As you know, it takes a while to scrub, analyze, and release code. I'm ecstatic to hear you're finding CAC interesting - I'll be excited to hear what you wind up finding out.
